FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
In response to Congressman Gresham Barrett’s request regarding a letter to President Obama, Representative Nikki Haley today released the following response:

Dear Gresham,
Like most South Carolinians, I of course strongly oppose the Obama Administration transferring terrorists to the Charleston Navy Brig or any facility in our state. Any such transfer could endanger the citizens of South Carolina, and everyone in our state should oppose it. Because your position is right, I will be happy to sign your letter.
However, calling on candidates for Governor to join you in a letter to President Obama, rather than asking your colleagues in Congress – who are actually in a position to prevent this potentially dangerous situation – to do the same, strikes me as little more than political grandstanding.
I would suggest writing another letter to President Obama that might do even more good. Please ask the President to stop using taxpayer dollars for the TARP bailout. As you were a supporter of the $700 billion Wall Street bailout, adding your voice to the chorus of conservative opposition to that continuing waste of tax dollars might actually prove helpful. South Carolina taxpayers are already overburdened without having to foot the bill for bailing out Wall Street’s failed corporate giants.
My very best,
Nikki

Representative Haley,
Please find attached a letter to President Barack Obama objecting to the potential transfer of known terrorists from Guantanamo Bay Cuba to any federal or state facility inside the State of South Carolina. I am asking you and the other candidates for Governor to join me in opposing this dangerous proposal by signing the attached letter.
You can return the letter with your signature by replying to this email or by faxing it to 866-954-9521. Please respond by 10:00am on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 as I intend to send this letter to the President shortly after that time.
Sincerely,
Gresham Barrett
