In August, Nikki Haley worked closely with the House Republican Caucus to set a bold and aggressive legislative agenda for 2007. Nikki is committed to keeping us informed as our state continues to move forward.

Illegal Immigration – Illegal immigration is an issue of great concern. This year, the Legislature did not move to pass any measures because the Federal government was still debating the issue. Any bills passed would have been trumped by Federal action. Because the Federal government has struggled with this issue, the House Caucus is making it a priority to work on measures that can be passed at the state level to control and protect South Carolina from the problems associated with illegal immigration.

Roads – South Carolina’s roads have reached a critical state. They are in dire need of improvement. High growth areas like ours are in need of additional roadways to ease traffic. Nikki will make a strong push for funding roads in South Carolina without increasing taxes or levying fees.

Workers Comp Reform – This continues to be the biggest burden on small businesses today. Nikki Haley is committed to reforming our workers comp system to reflect the strictest of guidelines so that small businesses don’t fall victim to rising rates year after year

Education – This year, the General Assembly passed important Charter School Legislation and funded the Education and Economic Development Act. These two measures help put students on career paths at earlier ages and illustrate the significant education reforms ongoing in South Carolina. Nikki is dedicated to continuing to make positive reforms to ensure students and teachers receive the tools for success.

Economy – Last year, South Carolina’s economy outperformed the national average by 250%. Encouraging economic growth will remain a top priority for the Legislature. Nikki believes we have an opportunity to make South Carolina the Hydrogen Fuel Leader. She will work to support policies and proposals that benefit research facilities and help create new jobs in our state.
